La politique culturelle des Allemands sous l’Occupation atteint l’ensemble des bibliothèques. Les bibliothèques privées et institutionnelles sont pillées et les livres transportés en Allemagne. Les Allemands contrôlent et surveillent les lectures des Français dans les bibliothèques publiques par la censure. Les bibliothécaires tentent de protéger leurs collections de la guerre, en évacuant les ouvrages les plus précieux vers des lieux sûrs et loin des combats. Tout comme les livres, ils sont catégorisés par l’occupant, selon leurs origines étrangères, juives, ou leur appartenance à la franc-maçonnerie. C’est une histoire encore méconnue que celles des bibliothèques sous l’Occupation, et ce mémoire a pour but de participer à son élaboration, en écrivant une page d’histoire locale sur les bibliothèques publiques d’Angers.
The German’s cultural policy in France during the Occupation strikes all the libraries. The private libraries and institutions are plundered and the books are sent to Germany. By using censorship the German are able to keep a close watch over the reading in public libraries. The librarians try to protect their collections from the war by evacuating the most valuable books to safe places, far away from the battlefield. Like their books, they are categorized by the Nazis, according to their foreign or Jews origins, or their allegiance to the Freemasonry. The history of the French libraries during the Occupation is still unknown. The goal of this essay is to make known this unique page of history and to bring some new insights through a local study of the public libraries of Angers.
