This master's thesis examines Irish writer Claire Keegan's treatment of silence in her collection of short stories Antarctica. Published in 1999, this collection marks a turning point into the 21st century in a changing Ireland. Silence is a theme that has been addressed by Irish writers in the past, and Claire Keegan follows this tradition while reinventing her own writing of silence. Silences represent what cannot easily be spoken of in society and are at the same time an effective means of conveying the trauma of sensitive events. There are compensatory elements that accompany these silences, such as means other than verbal communication like images. All this reflects Ireland's political and socio-cultural history. At the time this collection was written, the silence imposed by history and institutions was beginning to break, offering a new beginning to contemporary Irish short fiction.
