| Résumé | Ce mémoire s’intéresse à la manière dont Anthony Trollope, romancier victorien, traite du thème de l’amour interdit dans la novella : An Eye for an Eye, traduit par Œil pour Œil en langue française. Publiée en 1878, cette novella s’inscrit dans le contexte de l’époque victorienne. Trollope fait preuve d’innovation en choisissant une forme plus marginale au XIXème siècle, la novella. A mi-chemin entre le roman et la nouvelle, la novella ne rentre pas dans le canon littéraire de l’époque qui est celui du long roman en trois volumes. Ainsi, Trollope diffère aussi de ses contemporains en situant son histoire en Irlande, pays à l’époque sous la couronne britannique mais délaissé par ses sujets. Entre quête de soi et destin tragique, le personnage principal Fred doit faire un choix entre amour ou devoir, autrement dit entre passion et raison. Confronté à l’opposition entre l’utilitarisme de l’époque et l’influence toujours présente du romantisme, le personnage connaîtra comme seule issue la mort. Ainsi, nous pouvons nous questionner sur le lien entre mariage et amour selon les conventions victoriennes. Ce développement se concentre donc sur la façon dont Trollope combine le thème de l’amour interdit à la forme de la novella, afin de mieux comprendre l’influence de la société sur l’individu à cette époque. |
| Résumé en anglais | This dissertation examines Victorian novelist Anthony Trollope's treatment of the theme of forbidden love in the novella An Eye for an Eye. Published in 1878, this novella is set in the context of the Victorian era. Trollope shows innovation by choosing a more marginal form in the 19th century, the novella. Halfway between the novel and the short story, the novella does not fit into the literary canon of the time, which favoured the three-volume novel. Thus, Trollope also differs from his contemporaries by setting his story in Ireland, a country at the time under the British crown but neglected by its subjects. Between self-seeking and tragic fate, the main character Fred must make a choice between love and duty, in other words between passion and reason. Confronted with the opposition between the utilitarianism of the time and the ever-present influence of romanticism, the character's only outcome is death. Thus, we can question the link between marriage and love according to Victorian conventions. This development thus focuses on the way Trollope combines the theme of forbidden love with the form of the novella, in order to better understand the influence of society on the individual at that time. |
