| Résumé | Écrit et publié peu de temps après les deux guerres mondiales et surtout durant la Guerre Froide, The Haunting of Hill House s’inscrit parfaitement dans climat répressif et paranoïaque des années 1950s aux Etats-Unis. L'œuvre fait la jonction entre le Gothique et l’horreur psychologique, usant de l'introspection pour dépeindre la maladie mentale à travers le personnage d’Eleanor, mais surtout expose l’indifférence face à la maladie mentale et à ses conséquences dans une société américaine individualiste. En fait, tout le roman est instable, des parents abusifs à la construction peu orthodoxe de la maison, la folie y est omniprésente. Shirley Jackson a réussi à créer un roman terrifiant dans lequel tous les personnages sont à la fois victimes et vilains. |
| Résumé en anglais | Written and published shortly after the two world wars and most importantly during the Cold War, The Haunting of Hill House fits perfectly into the American repressive and paranoid climate of the 1950s. The work bridges the gap between Gothic and psychological horror using introspection to depict mental illness via the character of Eleanor, but moreover exposes the indifference to mental illness and its consequences within an individualistic American society. In fact, the entire novel is dysfunctional from the abusive parents to the unorthodoxly built house, madness is omnipresent. Shirley Jackson has succeeded in creating a terrifying novel in which the characters are all victims and villains at the same time. |
